Cory Booker and Beyond
Time for Democrats to rise and take a stand
I haven’t always been an enormous fan of U.S. Senator Cory Booker, but I am today. Good for him for making history’s longest speech from the Senate floor, especially since it wasn’t a filibuster and broke the old record of that notorious racist, Strom Thurmond, who spoke to try and block civil rights.
Democrats need to start speaking up strongly and loudly and be doing everything they can to block the Trump agenda and thwart his supporters, who really are enemies of the people. We have a bunch of old guard “leaders” like James Carville who say we should just wait for Trump to destroy himself. Germany was also full of traditionalists in 1933 who said the buffoon Hitler would be gone in six months. Guess what.
Yes, Democrats need to stay in touch with the grass roots and the people they often seem to have forgotten. I get that. But they need to realize that this is NOT business as usual. George Bush is not in the White House. A man who wants to destroy everything good about this country is. Whether he was right or wrong about the budget bill, Chuck Schumer, minority leader, needs to be sent to a deck chair in Palm Beach and replaced with someone like Chris Murphy.
It was an enormous political and intellectual failing for Michigan’s two U.S. Senators to vote to confirm the likes of Kristi Noem. To my surprise and growing delight, AOC seems to be exactly the right voice for right now.
You can’t compromise with fascists. You need to destroy them, and first to make people see why their power utterly needs to be destroyed
Former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich, himself a Washington insider, gets it. To quote from a recent substack column of his:
“Granted, it’s too early in the life of the Trump regime to be able to know the full extent of its awfulness or how bad his Cabinet is, but enough has happened already to form some preliminary views.
It is by far the worst presidency in American history — far surpassing James Buchanan’s, Andrew Johnson’s, Warren G. Harding’s, and even Trump’s first term in cruelty, corruption, and incompetence.
It has the least qualified people working in it and the worst Cabinet ever assembled. Don’t just take my word for it. Polls show a majority of American voters are disappointed with Trump’s Cabinet members, registering a record-high level of dissatisfaction over the last four presidential administrations.
The regime is filled with bottom-feeders, frauds, fanatics, and fools.”
Never give up, never give in, and do not argue with committed supporters of either Hitler or Trump. Instead, do all you can to reach those who have bought their bullshit.
As Tolkien fans know, if Sauron has the ring, nobody anywhere will be safe. Now, we need to do all we can to take it from him

Whilst a student at WMU, Lord Of the Rings was required reading in an " experimental general studies" class taught by Charlie Houston. Semester's end, he asked us why this is true history and what we had read in history books was not. Baffled freshmen then now get it.
He didn't read from the encyclopedia as Thurmond did. He didn't read from the phone book as others have. He made some noise. I was disappointed in our MI senators as well. I contacted Senator Slotkin's office regarding that. Thank you for your efforts Jack, I'm glad you're here.
