I also worry about the despair! And I do think it is orchestrated by those on the right who would really like us to live in a despair so profound that we don't even to vote. But another par tof it is also due to people forgetting about compromise-- while things are horrible, it is terrible to think about compromising further, but continual compromise among people on the left with one another is exactly what we're going to need going forward. I guess I am one of those who feel that the people who did not vote for Kamala Harris because she was not perfect for them is the reason we are in this boat right now. There is a historian named amanda nelson who talks eloquently about how our party is the big sprawling party with a big variety of opinions, and I wish we could enjoy that!

Those of us who LIVED the post-WWII golden age need to insist that it be resurrected, and more, we need to describe what it was like to younger generations who are being deprived so they can see what it was and help us fight to bring it back. Seems like the US has always see-saw'ed between progress and regression, and it's time for a great lurch forward. The stars are with us.

Even though I’m ready to flee the country, I often remind myself, as you just did, of the history of this nation and those darker times. Deep down, I feel like we will survive, but I’m not sure I have it in me to fight back while we build bootstraps big enough to pull ourselves out of this muck.
I’ve always planned on extracting myself upon retirement, mostly because of our country’s massive love affair with guns and violence, but now it just seems more urgent to get out while I still can. Sometimes I just wish for and daydream of a “Divided” States of America, and a “let them” mentality towards our brethren supporting a fascist state.
As Andy Dufrane said in the Shawshake Redemption “Hope is a good thing…perhaps the best of things. Never Never give it up”.
BTW: Remember Lenore Romney. I’m sure that it wasn’t Mitt Romney who suggested Lindsey’s sister as the late Senator’ replacement. History seems to repeat itself.
Wisdom ... as for the right side of history, who knows ... but your list of Presidents: Lincoln, and Kennedy is my side of history, and to stand with them in my own little way gives me courage. All three of these Presidents faced enormous challenges, and all three managed to reach for the greater good, paying attention to our better angels. I'd rather stand with them then the likes of Nixon, Reagan, and Trump (even as I write their names, I note that Nixon and Reagan had some decent policies; as for Trump, I find nothing but evil). It's right and proper that we lament the current state of affairs, but lament, when ill-managed, can become crippling despair. Paul the Apostle encouraged his young protege, Timothy, to be faithful in season and out of season (2 Timothy 4.2). Thanks Jack ... always grateful that our paths crossed.
