I will vote for the candidate that wins the Democratic primary. They all have their pros and cons. But it is imperative we elect as many democrats as possible at this point. In fighting is a gift to Republicans. Why give it to them when we we are battling fascism?

Great column. Needed to be said. Democrats MUST win in November!

BINGO! Let us be the party of FREE speech. Great column, as usual.

You are too kind. Mr. Mayor

Jack, I wonder about how much you read and study outside of our Dem/left tribe? After 2016 and especially after 2024 I added Commentary, Sam Harris, Coleman Hughes, Loury and McWhorter, Meghan Daum, Ben Shapiro, Douglas Murray, Helen Joyce, The Free Press, and many others to my existing list of: NYT, Atlantic, New Yorker, WSJ, NPR, etc

I thought I answered this earlier. I read very little contemporary political stuff, because I have been doing so for a lifetime. My major goal in life was always to be a well-read person; when I have a chance to read it is generally history or literature. I live in a house that is essentially beautiful library (thanks to Elizabeth) with well over a thousand books and at least one biography of every president; I have about ten of Nixon. I do read the Economist, best news magazine in the world, Foreign Affairs and the NYT, and occasionally the WSJ

I read very little political propaganda; I read mainly history and literature; I live in a house that is essentially a beautiful (thanks to Elizabeth) library. The only periodicals I regularly read are the indispensable Economist and Foreign Affairs, plus the NYT. I am somewhat well read.

And frankly,Professor,I can tell you read mainly history and literature.Like you,I read The Economist.

Deb,this handsome black cowboy has been reading since just before age three (I was gifted),and nearly everything I can reach.

Is it not the goal of a political party to WIN ELECTIONS?

Likely I will henceforth be known merely as the gal dumb enough to put her foot on the Palestine/Israel third rail. Thanks for my 15 minutes.

Pshaw. You are far more than that.

Abdul El-Sayed is a Bernie guy. In 2016 Bernie got a fair shot. While he supported HRC, his posse went off and pouted. That and some significant help from the uber rich whack jobs and Putin and we got DJT 1.0 for 4 years. In the late 60's the anti war pro pot youth elbowed their way to the front of the line in the Dem party both in Michigan and elsewhere. In Michigan the hippies pissed off and pissed on the older folks that worked for the party. They denigrated the union faction, and seemed to not know what farmers did or where they lived. We still have this problem. El-Sayed seems to be a darling this year. But this is not bean bag. And Michigan is not Wayne County or NYC. Who cares if he can win the primary. This is about who can (and will) win the general election. And maybe El-Sayed and his followers will support the winner. Or maybe they will pout like the Detroit area Middle East community did in 2024 and we will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory again. DJT 2.0. Fire, ready, aim.

Jack Lessenberry's avatar

That's an excellent summary. One caveat: Bernie really didn't get a fair shot in 2016; the system was rigged for Hillary, but he was an adult above it all.

Thanks for this note Jack ... winning the Senate seat is paramount ...

When ideas become ideologies, and those who embrace them forget who the real enemy is, then the Dems can expect to lose.

No one politician is ever going to embody all of our ideals, or dreams. But some can come closer to the ideal than others. After all, politics is always a game of thoughtful compromise, not only with the "other party," but with ourselves, as well.

As the GOP has well learned and continues to practice, winning is everything.

For us, in the next 12 months, winning is everything, and if it isn't, then, adios to this column and to lots of our freedoms. As soon as Hitler was "legally" appointed as Chancellor, he and his jackboot gang immediately rewrote all the laws to further his mad dreams of “Deutschland Uber Alles”

The stakes are higher than ever. Now is not the time to play ideological games to the blood end, because the bloody end will be our freedoms, our democracy.

Winning is everything.

I drove by your old church the other day for the first time in years. It looked a bit rundown, and I was sad hat you weren't still among we sinners.

Tom Eggebeen's avatar

Sinners for sure ... I've stayed in touch with a few folks ... yes, it's a bit rundown ... I was there for a memorial service, July, 2024 ... congregation is very small ... your name comes up now and then, and D always remembers, as do I, your savvy comments on how the US abandoned Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union ... you were at St. Paul's ... for a presentation ... anyway, we had some good times together ... some good restaurants ... and you're still holding up wisdom before the world ... hope our paths cross again, in person. Heck, I'm gonna be 82 this summer. Yikes.

Jack Lessenberry's avatar

I feel exactly the same !

Mark Wilson's avatar

Absolutely right. My criteria for choosing a primary candidate are very different than those I use to choose a candidate in the general election, when we're just given a choice between a Democrat or Republican. As you say, Democrats support democracy. And as long as we have that, we continue to be able to participate in our government. Republicans support a system in which our voices are immaterial--forever. It's not a difficult choice.

Slob-In-Chief.GREAT job,Professor, though I call him "King Slobbius The First!!!"

i hope the last!

You got that right !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then we must fight to prevent that and to keep the party decent, all of us.

I'm a lifelong Democrat, Jack, but if the Democratic Party embraces Jew-hatred, then I'm out. That does not mean I'll suddenly turn Republican. It means that I'm a Jew who knows through lived experience that the horseshoe theory is real. I hope my party rejects those who would throw longtime Jewish supporters under the bus, but these days, I'm not optimistic.
