I was there in 1996 for about 3 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it. There seemed to be a lot of mutual respect between the Japanese people and Americans by that time, at least we (I was an athlete representing the US) were treated very well. This wasn’t just by our hosts, but out in public as well. Enjoy your trip!

Enjoy. We fell in love with Kyoto, especially the gardens and temples. As a Zen Buddhist it was extra fascinating, though we could only find one Zendo that would let foreigners sit. The cleanest country in the world with some of the best food. They definitely have their own way to do things and do them very well. If Trump doesn't let you back in we'll know why.
