Talking Nuclear, Again
What nobody wants to think about
Last week I wrote about my interview with a Hiroshima survivor, whose life was forever shaped by the atom bomb dropped on her city on August 6, 1945. The Cold War ended more than 30 years ago, and people no longer build bomb shelters or make their kids practice hiding under their desks
.
Except .., consider this: We were saved from nuclear death during the Cold War by both sides’ adoption of the MAD doctrine - Mutual Assured Destruction. As in, one side fires one nuclear weapon, the other side fires them all, and the planet is destroyed. Not even the most fanatic John Bircher or raving Maoist commie wanted that. And so we were all saved. However, we now live in a world where there is a real possibility that some Muslim crazies could get the bomb, people who believe that a scenario where everybody dies would please Allah.
We also have pro-Palestinians chanting “From the River to the Sea,” which is a barely veiled call for the total destruction of Israel. However, it is an open secret that Israel has nuclear weapons. What do you think they’d do if there was any real threat they’d be swept into the sea? Do you have any doubt they’d use them?
Be careful what you wish for. comrades: You just might get it.

It’s a very difficult post to just ‘like’. There is an uncomfortable situation with the president being a demented crackpot with the trigger. His band of sycophants are even worse. I didn’t feel this anxious in the 60’s.
My fear for a long time was Pakistan/India (at least for each other) since they both have nukes and hate each other with a passion that goes a long way back. The movies have done a good job alerting us to the danger of terrorists since I think you're right--and that's the greatest danger. My father always thought it was the Middle East but it looks like they're simply going to use 2,000 pounders and mass starvation. No chance of fallout and they're just as dead.
