Key Phrase:" A society that works for everyone". We also have people that believe that for ME to be a Winner, there have to be LOSERS. Meanwhile we have become a Fraiddy Cat country letting the culture wars and fear of immigrants scare enough morons to vote for the orange marmalade. For almost 100 years we introduced socialism with Social Security.

Do away with socialism and it's pay as you go fire department, police, roads, etc. Give me some socialized medicine for all, add to all the other things we get with our tax dollars.

Yeah, some idiot at some political town hall made the infamous comment "We don't want socialized medicine, and don't touch my Medicare."

Better a socialist than a sociopath.

Yes... though they aren't mutually exclusive!

Yes, the Republican establishment has done a good job of demonizing certain words (and people and concepts).

It is good to remember that the word is not the thing. A map is not the place.

Whoever said that socialism also always leads to Communism is obviously an idiot. Look at all of the socialist countries of Europe, that have higher standards of living than us, and have not turned communist.

The word is not the thing. It may be time to rebrand and rename socialism because of the baggage that has been attached to it.

I don't mind calling it economic democracy. I would also say social democracy, but there's that nasty social word.

By the way, I also thought that a good platform name for Kamala Harris, and anybody/everybody running now is "Fair Deal". Nobody is against fairness, and we all want fairness, and we all need fairness in taxation, wealth distribution, and justice. It also harkens back to FDR's New Deal. Simple and understandable.

But then nobody asked me.

Yes, the great intellectual Tony Judt thought socialism was a great idea but too tainted a word. However, Harris could not have used Fair Deal; it was Harry Truman's slogan, I do like economic democracy -- excellent idea

I don't see why somebody can't use the term "Fair Deal" again.

Nobody is going to enforce a copyright or ask for royalties.

Everything old is new again.

Great column! And don't forget socialized medicine in the form of the Veterans Administration.
