I'm waiting for the day when Trump insults a reporter and they respond with, "I don't care who the hell you are, you don't talk to me like that."

Where is the self-respect?

Taking the insults without response also normalizes his behavior.

Sure, it would probably result in being fired, but eating a shit pie ain't worth it.

And where are all the other reporters' outrage and defense of the abused?

I think there must be something wrong with the journalism schools. There is a tendency just to report, as you point out, both "sides" of an issue, as if both sides necessarily have some merit. There's rampant false equivalency going on which also normalizes the insanity. There isn't always two sides to every issue. Sometimes there is a right and a wrong.

Where are the Edward R. Murrows?

On a somewhat related note, when Trump would hold forth in the hallway during his trial, I was dying for someone to just yell out some nasty stuff. There isn't any reason in hell that this loathesome creature deserves any consideration.

Where are the great political orators? It can make a difference.

And I want to hear loud voices and anger. The opposition is just speaking in normal tones of voice. This just won't do.

Not mentioned is the reality that whatever a journalist may think privately, and whatever they may feel professionally would make a good and honest piece for publication/broadcast --

They still have to contend with editors and publishers (not to mention shareholders) who hold editorial control as well as have their own oxen to protect from goring.

Perhaps every J major should be required to take what was a very popular course called Abnormal Psychology. As Adam Grant (in his NYT OpEd today) points out there are people who simply enjoy the show put on by a narcissist. When T first ran the network ratings were great and the bean counters were happy. There are no Edward R Murrows or Bob Woodwards left. Being a member of the WH Press Corp is a prestigious position. Just do your job and try not to piss him off seems to be the advice coming from the heads of news organizations.

Great article and absolute truth. Journalism was more polite and respectful in “ the old days.” But those days are gone with this regime. Their lack of respect, professionalism, ethics, along with their crude and vulgar take on everything is their way of communicating. Not only is it crude it is laden with racist, sexist and bigoted remarks about everybody. So politeness goes out the door. This regime demands hard and uncomfortable questions! They deserve to be held up to the light! They should be questioned about everything. The media should report their none answers, their deflections, distractions. The media needs to demand accountability for their vicious and violent behaviors and actions. The tide is turning albeit slowly against the regime. The harder we push against them, and expose them, the sooner they will fall.

Good insight, but I am still perplexed as why basic journalism does not apply. Reporters seldom or never challenge his outlandish claims. They just say thank you and don’t ask follow up questions or ask for clarifying remarks. They wouldn’t do that with Joe Biden. Trump is treated differently.
