Simply stated, the Founders wanted to avoid direct election of the president. State's rights were still a left over attitude controlling public policy. Remember that power and the right to vote was still with land owners and only half the population (women) could not vote. Some fear of the mob was a factor for the framers of public policy. Perhaps fear of illiterate and ignorant voters also existed. Ironic eh?

Thank you Jack. The electoral college can be a bit confusing. And another trend by the far right is to cancel the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. We cannot let this happen and will need as many men as women to fight this nonsensical movement.

And the right wants to make it all but impossible for African Americans to vote. I'm 72 and as an 11-year-old lad remember Mar.7,1965,"Bloody Sunday" on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma,Ala.,where Americans and the world watched televised images of fugly inbred goobers deputized by equally disgusting Dallas County,Ala. Sheriff Jim Clark beating, water hosing and siccing vicious police dogs on quiet, peaceful Voting Rights demonstrators dressed in their finery (The march occurred Mar.21,1965 under Alabama National Guard protection and Pres. Lyndon N. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act in July, around my twelfth birthday.)

Thank you Brady and I agree with you too. All the people they are trying yo marginalize need to band together and push back hard.

Nothing is perfect, and when unscrupulous interests choose to manipulate a system to their advantage, the weaknesses are revealed. I, too, have long championed the electoral college, though in recent years, I have seen it manipulated by the triumverate of reaction: wealth, religion, and discontent. I look forward to your follow-up piece.

Another comment? Nope. A request for comments from Jack’s followers. After being a delighted subscriber for several months, I am recognizing a pattern in my own consumption of Jack’s posts. I am admittedly a little odd in some (well, more a few more) ways, so my reaction to Jack’ columns may be an outlier. Here’s the deal: I find myself paying little attention to P & P on weekends. Sure, I open the file, but too often I glance and delete. Too much other stuff to handle or it is just time for a break. So here is my comment: “Proposed: Jack will pack all his wisdom into 5 columns per week, and leave us panting for the next enlightenment on Monday.”
