Oh, my. At first, I read the headline as you being in favor of term limits. Yeah it's early. (I imagine that you are still sound asleep, and that this was posted automatically. Prove me wrong, as they say these days.)

This is absolutely one of my pet peeves, although that is too mild of a term for it.

It's infuriating.

Does the term "baby out with the bath water" ring a bell?

I will never ever vote to take away my right to vote. And that's what it is.

I frequently quote Dave Wakeling of the band English Beat in the song "Sugar and Stress":

"This world is upside down

The rights and wrongs don’t get much wronger

Mistakes found in the past turn into rules protecting power"

My sister ( Maxine Berman) who passed away almost 8 years ago was very much against term limits. She was Southfields state rep for almost 20 years. She felt that people in the legislature had to have time to get to know each other and work together and the work they were doing. Term limits prevent this.

Spot on. People confuse the “need for term limits” with the real problem: the need for campaign finance reform. I appreciate your wisdom and column. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃

Thanks Jack for so eloquently describing the mess that term limits have made of the State of Michigan. I've basically described our term limits causing us to have a bunch of ideological nitwits that have no clue how to govern. A term limited politician does not work for the voters, why would they? They will work for whatever next job they are shooting for.

And finally, term limits my freedom of choice to select my representative in the legislature. The other indirect result is the erosion of constituent relations. Meanwhile $s and lobbyists have been empowered. Some actually craft bills for the rookies. By the way, Michigan Legislators are "full time" and the best paid and the least productive. Term Limits have been a disaster.

Jack:

Have a good Thanksgiving Day. Hopefully with friends and family, I spent some of them overseas. I would do phone calls back to the states via shortwave radio as a state side operator would volunteer to be the receiving radio,

Now we have a young family next door, On the other side two young ladies who invited us to dinner sometime in the future. And a Mexican family across the street who regard us as the grandparents.

What does that have to do with term limits? Nothing really.

I remember Joe Hune who was our State Senator. Was not worth much in that role. He was replaced by Lana Theis. I did not think much of her either. The carpetbagger Mikie Rogers is returning to Michigan to run for Senator. He has a small house somewhere in Michigan which causes him to be a resident. Lucky you!

I met Slotkin when she first started her run in politics. The head of the Dems in Livingston County invited me and others to coffee with her near Howell, A sharp tongue which i did not appreciated then. However. it has placed her prominently in a leadership role opposing the Repubs. She is doing well. I like her now.

The biggest issue we as a nation have today? Is the loss of subsidies for healthcare which will impact 20 or so million people and can and will leave all or many leave them without healthcare.

If I had stayed in Michigan, I can not imagine having to deal with Hune, Theis, etc, forever and till their retirement.

Have a good and safe holiday. Need to finish up a commentary on the loss of healthcare insurance for my Blog. Best to you and family . . .
