Jack, you have been a trusted source of information and analysis for pretty much the entire time you mentioned. I am glad that I had the pleasure of listening to you on Michigan Public Radio, as I can now read your columns in your calm, well-reasoned voice. Yours was the first Substack I ever subscribed to.
It is challenging to try and make it through day after day of American compassion, normalcy and prudence being tossed onto a madman's bonfire. I look forward to your comments every day, to counterbalance the depravity of the dying Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of our government.
I enjoy reading and reflecting on informed opinions. Pablum is not helpful nor is constant straddling of ideological midpoints. However, a commentator's appreciation for his own and mankind's fallibility is necessary for me to support sustained appreciation. A narcissist's certainty in his rectitude and omniscience (any name spring to mind?) causes me to toggle to the "off" position. The switch here is "on".
An impressive resume. Shoe-leather reporting and journalistic-based commentary doesn't put you at the front of the Nobel Prize line, those spaces are generally reserved for our great fiction writers (although Bob Dylan, as usual proved to be the exception), but the craft has been, continues to be and hopefully will remain impactful. Worth reading.
Jack- you are incredibly accurate-ON POINT. You-exemplify the saying in my Law Office-and it's on the wall "ALL WE CAN DO IS STRIVE FOR THE CLOSEST APPROXIMATION OF TRUTH" WITH GRATITUDE-PLEASE KEEP WRITING.
It's enough for me you make sense in world where fewer and fewer do. You could have done all those things and been a jerk, but you are not and a grateful readership is thankful and I'm sure those Australian Shepherds are too.
Have been following you in one form or another for quite sometime....your writings and commentary have always appeared balanced and well researched. These days I'm sure you get your share of accusations of being woke and liberal, simply because you're brave enough to describe the elephant in the room. I'm grateful for your work, and am choosing today to upgrade to a paid follower. Thanks Jack for what you do...don't let the bastards get you down.
Being a lifelong Michigander and spending 15 yrs in public media, I very much appreciate Jack's work. His nearly half a century's worth of journalism experience brings valuable knowledge to the table. I believe his opinions are based on this knowledge as well as facts. Facts are facts. Easily verifiable. If you don't believe what he's saying, just fact-check. Keep doing the good work Jack.
I really enjoy your Substacks. Your lengthy time as a journalist and deep thinker is obvious. I have learned a lot. I am also happy to have you as a follower. I find it strange that the big political division between conservatives and liberals seems to be based on those who believe lies (C) and those who believe facts (L).
Thank you for keeping us informed. Dan Rather's "Steady" is another excellent news source. We need you more than ever in these turbulent "fake news" times.
Lowell, you absolutely made my day, and I'm honored you subscribed!
Reliable journalistic sources need to be supported. That's why NPR, PBS, Bridge, NowKalamazoo all have my support...happy to add your work to my list.

Oh, what fresh hell is this?
Thank you. And you really couldn't make any of this up, could you?
Honestly, nope.

Much appreciated. I know very well that I am sometimes wrong!

Thank you. My shoe store does too
Jack, hope you forgive this off-topic comment.
Help me reframe this "Epstein file" issue thusly:
THE PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW IF THE PRESIDENT IS A PEDOPHILE.
I have been trying in vain to get somebody in the media or power to merely say these words.
Hope to see you at the Oak Park library on the 21st. I live across the street.
Good idea!
Please come
Thank you.
I admire the wisdom of those who agree with me.
don't we all!

You are a great motivator!
I always appreciate your positive take on life and events....
So ... what is that story about the Australian Shepherds?
I have two of them, and they are my kids! Thank you. I sometimes put pictures of them on Facebook

That means a lot to me. Thanks !
